Information Consumer became Information Provider

Started as User – later active as Webmaster

Start with BTX, then Datex-P, ISDN, Gallery BBS, FidoNet, web user, web presence since 1999

Already wanted to become an Information Provider in BTX Times

BTX (Bildschirmtext, an online service of the Deutsche Bundespost) was very expensive at that time and you could only become a provider of your own pages with a trade licence. The Deutsche Bundespost assumed that you earn money with your BTX offer and that the high fees are tax deductible.

You could not become a BTX Provider without Business

So nothing came of the BTX provider career, because I used BTX just for fun – just like these web pages are created as a hobby and all information is provided for free.

Mailbox Gallery BBS – Member of FidoNet

After all, even before the beginning of the internet age I was able to offer my own and other collected information, freeware and shareware via my Mailbox «Gallery BBS» to interested parties via remote data transmission (DFÜ) and long before e-mail existed, my PC transmitted netmails and especially urgent crash mails via FidoNet.
It was an exciting time, when you could not yet click online from page to page, but dialled in from mailbox to mailbox via modem or ISDN (landline). Every change of the information provider cost a new unit of charge, because the previous modem connection had to be interrupted and a new dial-up connection had to be established. Flat rates were far from being available.

Information offer at that Time similar, Chats and Online Games popular

The offer of information was already very similar to today's, also the chat with the system operator (short: SysOp = mailbox operator) or another user connected online at the same time was popular – but many things were not so anonymous, one also made appointments with friends for chat or online games – this also existed at that time long before the internet.

Website Operator for twenty Years

Initially I only offered the information pages and freeware/shareware from the previously successfully operated Mailbox Gallery BBS on my website. I wanted to transfer the menu structure and operation of the Mailbox (user interface) to the homepage so that my users did not have to get used to it. But this was hardly possible with the means available at that time, so I quickly gave up this idea.

End of November 2001 I started my Project sinnvoll online / senseful online

End of November 2001 I registered the domain and since then I offer general information separately from the private website Information that is interesting for the general public, such as practical tests of hardware and software in the computer, multimedia and telecommunication sector, is published via domains with the motto sinnvoll online.

Motto as Host Name: sensefulonline

The Hostname (sensefulonline) should be the motto of this website: Do not surf senselessly online.

Technical fascination, exchange of experience, recommendation of good internet addresses and private further education in web design were the motivation to create this website in April 1999. In the beginning with my name as domain and since 30.11.2001 online under the motto senseful online.

Domains registered for this Website

30.11.2001: Domain with TLD .de:    for German-language content.
09.06.2013: Domain with TLD .eu:    for German-language content.
09.06.2013: Domain with TLD .eu:   for English-language content.
03.07.2015: Domain with TLD .info:  for German-language content.
07.07.2015: Domain with TLD .info: for English-language content.
28.01.2018: Domain with TLD .de:   for English-language content.

The domain name ( says briefly and concisely: sinnvoll online, to find the information you are looking for. By the way, the name of the domain should make e-mail recipients curious about my website. Wink Smiley

Change of Internet Service Provider and moving the Website

12.09.2020: By chance I come again today to the site of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) UD Media GmbH, which I found interesting months ago when I was looking for an ISP which supports DANE and DNSSEC. After comparing the domain prices with my current web host I decide to change.

After thorough examination of the proper website I order the web hosting package Classic Hosting Power 5.0 (5,00 EUR/month with 5 inclusive domains).
Enough for the most important domains. As all domains have already been extended for one year with the old internet service provider, I have until the beginning of 2021 to move the domains and can consider until then whether I really will keep all domains. Maybe I'll keep all domains and pay 9.00 EUR/year per .de domain in addition, or I'll switch to a hosting package with 10 inclusive domains (UD Media will take the remaining time into account, not every web hoster does that fairly!)

No. 5 is alive:

I thought again about the name of this website and registered a more meaningful domain name!
As the 5th inclusive domain, I am registering a brand new one, which has additional advantages:

  1. newly ordered domains are available almost immediately after ordering
  2. my website is immediately online with the new provider and for problems I have «plan B», see 3. + 4.
  3. Should the new ISP disappoint me after all, I have 30 days right of withdrawal
  4. If the old ISP does not hand out the authorisation codes quickly, my website will not be offline for weeks: see 2.

Only 5 hours later, so I can start on the same Saturday evening!
I immediately upload a copy of and start making text changes.
14.09.2020: In the meantime everything is done. I love it when a plan works! Laughing Smiley

Many thanks for your interest

I'm glad you've read this far – maybe you were a user of Gallery BBS back then?
If so, I would be very happy to receive a greeting message.
